The Duke at Rancho El Dorado - Phoenix Arizona
PHOENIX, Arizona Dec 2007
The Duke at Rancho El Dorado - Resort Style Golf at Ranch Hand Prices

Golf courses throughout the world have distinctive styles. In Great Britain, links style golf predominates, and in the United States, especially in the east, golfers must negotiate tree-lined fairways. Desert golf, in particular Arizona golf, evokes visions of narrow ribbons of emerald green grass framed by saguaro cactus, jumping cholla, sage brush and mesquites trees.

Although picturesque, desert golf creates challenges for the average player that can zap enjoyment from the game. Take for instance the dreaded five-and-a-half-hour-round that tends to rear its ugly head when golfers are endlessly searching the desert for errant shots. Wouldn’t it be nice to play an Arizona golf course that offers more forgiving fairways, yet allows low handicap players to push their games to the limit? Well, The Duke at Rancho El Dorado is exactly that type of golf course.

The Duke at Rancho El Dorado

The Duke is an 18-hole, par-72 golf club located 10 minutes west of I-10 on Queen Creek Road near the town of Maricopa. Measuring 7,011 yards from the back tees, the golf course has plenty of length to keep the expert player interested and at the same time will not trounce the novice. Best of all, no first-tee jitters here because the first fairway is, no kidding, 45 yards wide. Not all the fairways at The Duke are as wide as the first fairway, but they are more spacious than the standard Arizona desert course. The huge fairways are designed for huge drives, a welcome change from the white knuckle “maybe I-should-hit-three-wood” golf holes all too common to desert golf.

Another design element that really makes The Duke into a course for all players is the green complexes. The greens roll very well, are undulated but fair and are receptive to well-struck shots.

Make no mistake about it, poor shots will be penalized by a well placed bunker or water hazard like the island green on the par-3 5th hole. The course is not penal but players will still need to excel to score.

Managed by OB Sports, The Duke has an easy-going western theme that gives the club a certain charm. The Silver Spur Grill, the main dining venue, was recognized as one of the top ten 19th holes in the state by the Arizona Golf Association (AGA).

The Duke at Rancho El Dorado has mastered the balancing act between quality and affordability. What’s more, The Duke is a golf course that can best be described as fun to play. With wide open fairways, friendly faces and reasonable rates The Duke is a must play for those who love the game.
