Pole Creek Golf Club - Mountain Resort Colorado
Winter Park, CO. Sep 2007 - Pole Creek is one of the few public 27-hole facilities in Colorado and the only one in Grand County. Designed by Denis Griffiths, Pole Creek’s challenging “Classic” mountain style course weaves its way through valley meadows, sagebrush and a variety of water hazards including five lakes. Interestingly, I felt as if I was constantly surrounded by the steep walls of the great Rocky Mountains. It is also safe to say Colorado has a “Diamond in the Rough” only an hour drive from the state capital –Denver.

Sitting on a very unique piece of land, Pole Creek’s layout consist of three very unique nines; The Ranch, The Meadows and The Ridge. With all combinations stretching over 7000 yards and fairways lined with tall mature pines. Length is an apparent need but accuracy of most importance.

Pole Creek’s bite begins at the first green with a tight grip on your putter for the rest of the round. The only comfort you will feel on this course is the time spent between strokes taking in the spectacular views of the Rocky Mountains. It is intriguing because not only does it show off the natural beauty of the land, but it also takes depth out of many approach shots, forcing players to trust their instincts.

The one hole that really caught my attention was #2 on The Meadow, it might possibly be the most narrow looking 534 yard par 5 (from the tips) I’ve every played. In spite of its relative moderate length, navigating your ball through this tight hole from tee to green is a formidable task for

even the better players. Slashing away on this tight par 5 is not an option. Only true technicians and accomplished players will feel comfortable standing on tee. It is quite a sight for only 534 yards.

The 27-holes at Pole Creek are among the top of my favorite places to play list. The surroundings, the views and course conditions all put together created one of my most exhilarating golf experiences ever. Manage your game; try to hold back just a little. The “Thinking Golfer” on this course will be rewarded and likely be the benefactor of a friendly wager.

For the golfers who must take chances and risks, your scorecard will be littered with double digit numbers as this course has a big bite as well as bark. Take time during your round to stop and reflect on your surrounding. I highly recommend Pole Creek as one of my “MUST PLAY courses. This is a true mountain course that must not be overlooked as one of Colorado’s “BEST”.
